Aurelién Potier
For Paris+ par Art Basel, Gianni Manhattan is pleased to present a new installation of Aurélien Potier.
At the core of these new works is the interpretation of loss, but also of resilience. It is a subdivision of a traumatic individual and collective experience and its remains. Here, inner paradoxes of the three elements - mortar, crystals and nodes - are equally explored, emphasizing the fragility and impermanence of the structures that tie us.
Mortar, extremely tangled metal cables hanging from the ceiling, seawater distilled crystals on nodes are three major components of his inner-construction site exposed to the public. This construction site is examined by reflecting on the immediacy of his body and the landscape of Montrose beach, a gay cruising spot in the Calanques of Marseille.
Mortar has long been seen as a sign of strength, a symbol of security and protection as its use of construction material of a territory. It is also a reminder of knowledge and wisdom - transmitted through kinships, binding memories. The usage of the medium is a poetic metaphor of a band and a link, possibly referring to a force that ties individuals. The sense of belonging is only here to be let down by its cracking and crumbling character, as if to make the walls porous.

Crystallization points to the amorphous or unpredictable. Minerals are something to be explored and found, pulled slowly out into the open. It involves taking formeless or disorderly elements and arranging them into a purposeful pattern. Considering their corrosive quality, they also express loss, struggle and disappointment.
Nodes are a point of connection between two separate elements or a point of particular significance within a larger system. It is thought of as a central hub or a focal point for the growth and development of the entire system. They can be hope and action. As a representation of an ability to connect and form relationships, nodes also come with an inevitable coexistence of exhaustion and complexity.
