2D Animation

Semitransparent lines move across a white surface. They fall, they fail, they open up holes, wounds, space. The video follows an intuitive path: at times the hand follows the line, at others it guides it.
Tomadaki’s 2D animation Ahh, much like her paintings, is the trace of a movement that obsessively returns to the same point. At the core of her practice is the reduction of forms to their minimum, stripping figuration down to its barest gesture. What remains is the imprint of a movement that is now dead, and yet restless: violent, erotic and unable to evolve, but also to disappear.
The notion of the line is very present in her work, as much in the paintings as in the animations. It manically attempts for progress yet remains still. It circles, repeats, and insists until language, narrative and image begin to collapse. Movement still exists but it no longer leads anywhere. Lines continue to move and evolve, yet linear progress becomes impossible. The line is cursed to collapse back into the point.
